PROSTATUS' relation to the SDGs

SDG 3 logo Both iGEM and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) adhere to UN's goals for sustainable development. The SDU-Denmark iGEM projekt PROSTATUS relates to goal number three – Good health and well-being. The goal of the third SDG is, among others, to disseminate and provide access to safe and effective medicine and equipment for everyone. Included in this, is the development of affordable medical equipment, which is an essential part.

PROSTATUS relates directly to three of the subgoals within goal three:
3.4 By 2030 reduce, by 1/3, premature mortality of non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.

PROSTATUS contributes to this subgoal by ensuring that people with prostate cancer, a non-communicable disease, is not over-treated if the cancer is not malignant, as complications such as sepsis is common from the current diagnostic procedure. This is important, as the prevalence of benign prostate cancer correlates with aging, specifically at 50+ years of age, meaning that many men die with, rather than of, prostate cancer.

3.7 By 2030, universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs must be ensured.

PROSTATUS contributes to this subgoal by ensuring a convenient way to test for prostate cancer, which undetected can lead to reproductive problems, general pain, and loss of life quality.

3.8 Universal health coverage must be achieved, including protection against financial risks, access to high-quality vital health services, and access to safe and effective vital quality medicines and vaccines at an affordable price for all.

3.8b Support the research and development of vaccines and medicines for the treatment of infectious and non-communicable diseases must be supported, and primarily in areas affecting developing countries, promote access to vital medicines and vaccines at an affordable price in accordance with the Doha Declaration on TRIPS Agreement and Public Health, which reaffirms the right of developing countries to fully apply the provisions of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights regarding flexibility in the protection of public health, and in particular to ensure access to medicine for all.

PROSTATUS contribute to this subgoal by providing easy access to several cancer test(s), which are more precise than most of the competitors, and is convenient for testing at home or at the doctors office.
