Day 3
During the afternoon of Wednesday, October 7, 2020,"Why Should ASL be Involved in the Scientific Community" took place via the zoom platform. One of our objectives for this week was to bring awareness about the importance of inclusion in our scientific community, including our deaf community. That's why we decided to dedicate a day of this week to talk about the importance of learning and having awareness of the diversity of languages, in this case sign language. .
During this conference, we had collaborations with the University Association of Sign Language (AULS RUM) and graduate student PhD-MD Ian DeAndrea-Lazarus. Firstly, we opened the discussion with a video from Ian where he told us about the challenges he faced in the scientific community as a student and professional in the science field. Also, they took this opportunity to educate people attending including ourselves about the American Sign Language and taught the basics of it.
