Laboratory Safety
Our iGEM team's laboratory is located on the site of our school, EPFL. It is Biosafety Level 1 laboratory, and is in full compliance with the iGEM regulations. Before our team started the effective laboratory work, all the team members received a safety and security training from the EPFL Security, Prevention and Health Office (DSPS) regarding the laboratory equipment, prevention and assessment of risks as well as emergency procedures. All the team members who accessed the laboratory received training for the laboratory equipment and learned how to run experiments according to predefined protocols.
Project Safety
For the purpose of our project, we used S.cerevisiae (BY4741 parental strain, deletion strains, and reporter strains) in order to detect pesticides in water. S.cerevisiae is Biosafety Level 1 organism, so it does not pose any threat to us or to the environment. We also used pesticides (Atrazine-desisopropyl, Bentazon, Chloridazon, Chlorothalonil (and metabolites), Atrazine, Atrazine-desethyl, Simazine, Metolachlor, Diazinon, DDT) that can be mutagens and carcinogens and represent a serious threat to health and environment. As a matter of fact, all experiments implying pesticides were performed under a fume hood with the required laboratory equipment and waste has been correctly disposed of after running the experiments.
