Safety

All our experiments were conducted in p2 laboratory. In addition, clean bench was used to prevent contamination with dust and airborne microorganisms during the inoculation work. When we uses clean bench, accessories such as watches were removed, the sleeves were rolled up to the elbows, and the hands and equipment used in the experiment were disinfected with 70% ethanol. Moreover, we prepared our experimental consumables with autoclave, such as autoclaved pipette tips and microcentrifuge tubes. And autoclave was also used to prevent leakage of genetically modified E. coli from the laboratory and to prevent contamination. The bacteria we used in our experiment, DH 5α does not cause health problems in human body.

All the team members received safety training on safety rules, safety equipment, and emergency response. For example, I learned to use eye washer and emergency shower from the safety training seminar. And for the correspondence during fire, emergency contact is always attached in the lab.

Moreover, we also received lectures about the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and Japanese laws on safety management before conducting genetic modification experiments.
