The New Era of Biotechnology
During the morning of Tuesday, October 6, 2020, the first activity during the week of synthetic biology, "The New Era of Biotechnology", via the ZOOM platform. We offered a short introductory presentation on what synthetic biology is, along with its applications and tools.
Our research director, Paula Mañán, led the presentation on the basis of synthetic biology. Afterwards, led by the agronomist Sol Rosado, President of the Puerto Rico Agricultural Biotechnology Industry (PRABIA), a presentation was held on agricultural biotechnology and its role in Puerto Rico. Despite being a small island, our geographic location is strategic for crops throughout the year, leading us to be successful in three of the five most important crops in the world. This emerging branch allows us to learn more about genetically modified organisms and plants to carry out a higher yield and thus fulfill a right of life which is food. During this talk, the steps, costs, and duration of the process of genetic modifications were mentioned. The audience was exhorted to develop in science careers to renew the current world for the benefit of the planet and humanity.
We had the participation of university students, high school students, student associations in other areas of science, members of our team, as well as people from the Technological of Monterrey in Mexico.
