Early Detection Card Game
The goal of the game is to be the first player to find the correct card. Early detection is key. The correct card changes every round and there may be more than one correct card each round so you got to think fast!
This game is played using a regular deck of cards. The goal of the game is to be the first to identify the correct card as indicated by the aces. The aces indicate if you are playing for the highest or lowest card and if you are playing for an odd or an even card.
The Aces tell you what card you are playing for. If the Ace is Red then you are playing for even cards. If the ace is black then you are playing for odd cards.
Hearts means you are playing for the lowest even cards.
Diamonds means you are playing for the highest even cards.
Cloves means you are playing for the lowest odd cards.
Spades means you are playing for the highest odd cards.
Once the card indicated by the aces has been claimed, shuffle the aces back together, flip over a new card to replace the card and then flip over a new ace to start the next round.
Gameplay
1. To set the game up start by removing the four aces from the deck, shuffle them, and put them aside facedown.
2. Take the rest of the cards and shuffle them and place them face down next to the aces.
3. Lay out 8 cards face up on the table and flip over one Ace.
4. Players call out the card in play that matches the Ace that was flipped. Fastest to call correctly takes the card and gets the point. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
5. Place a new card out and start a new round.
It is possible to have more than one correct card each round, the subsequent cards go the person who declares them. It is possible to gain more than one point each round each turn this way, but you can only claim one card at a time. Once a card has been declared, flip over a new card and begin a new round.
Number of cards
If you are replacing all the cards on the table each round the game gets easier the fewer cards there are on the table, but if you are only replacing the cards that are claimed each round the game gets easier the more cards there are on the table. This is the recommended play style for larger groups or parties. The recommended number or cards are 6, 8 or 12.
End game
There are two ways to end the game
Option 1: At the end of each round shuffle all the cards except the winning card back in and play until the cards are finished.
Option 2: Once a player has claimed a card, replace it with a new card, shuffle the aces and start a new round. The player with the most points wins.
Optional rules
Jokers: You can include jokers with the aces, if you do flip over a joker you are playing for both the highest and lowest card in play, it doesn’t matter if they are even or odd. With this rule you are playing for at least two cards.
Declaring or grabbing the card It is up to you weather you get the card by declaring it, i.e. saying the card out loud or if you declare it by grabbing the card. You can only claim or grab one card at a time.
Play example
Example 1: John and his friends are playing “Early detection”, John was the last one to go to the doctor so he starts. They are playing on easy mode, so he sets out 6 cards on the table face up. Then he flips over one of the aces. It’s the ace of hearts so they are playing for the lowest even card. There are two two’s on the table face up.
Stine immediately declares “Two of hearts” and a little bit after John declares “Two of spades”. They both take their cards and place them in front of them face down as a point. Stine was the first one to declare so she prepares the next round, shuffles the aces back and flips over the next ace.
Example 2: After John and his friends have been playing for a while, they decide to shuffle in the Jokers with the aces to spice things up a bit. They set up a new round by placing the cards face up on the table and then flip over a card from aces pile. The card is a Joker, so now they are playing for both the highest and the lowest. The cards are 4 of spades, 7 of hearts, 10 of spades, Jack of hearts, King of diamonds and King of cloves.
Stine immediately declares “4 of spades” and then quickly follows up with “King of cloves”, John then follows with “King of diamonds”.
In this round Stine got two points and John got one point.
