1 Public Investigation
We conducted a questionnaire survey on whether you knew about antibiotic abuse, superbacteria and other
related issues. This will help us know public's attitude towards antibiotics and the understanding and
awareness of superbacteria.
Methods of questionnaire distribution: Internet (Questionnaire Star), WeChat, QQ, community distribution...
Number of questionnaires returned: 576
Questionnaire Results:
1. The age distribution
As the figure shows, the distribution of different age groups in our questionnaire is relatively uniform.
Although the number of different age groups varies slightly, it is generally in line with our expectations.
2. Do you have bacterial infection on yourself or around you?
We can see that nearly half of the people around the bacterial infection and bacterial infection in daily
life is a more frequent thing.
3. Do you know the fact that some bacteria can't be killed by antibiotics?
In this survey, nearly 70% of the people knew that some bacteria could not be killed by antibiotics while
the remaining 30% said they did not understand the problem. It can be seen that the fact that antibiotics
fail in some areas has been recognized by the majority of the public.
4. Have you ever heard of super bacteria?
Of the 576 questionnaires, more than 84% said they had heard of superbugs, while less than 16% said they had
not.
According to the questionnaire result, bacterial infection is still relatively common in our life, and the
masses have a certain basic knowledge of antibiotics; but in terms of drug resistance, the masses do not
have a deep understanding. Although most people have expressed their understanding of it, they are likely to
have only heard of terms and have not conducted in-depth understanding. It can be seen that the public is
not fully aware of the types, treatment and harm of antibiotics. We hope to improve public awareness and
education on antibiotic resistance and how to handle it through effective communication and education.
2 Community Advocacy
In order to appeal the public’s attention to the spread of antimicrobial resistance, promote the rationality
of the use of antibiotics, enhance the public's awareness of the rational use of antibiotics and to
effectively serve the public health, we went into the community to give a popular science lecture on
bacterial infection and rational use of antibiotics, which mainly summarized the indications of
antibacterial drugs, precautions for the use of antibacterial drugs, and measures to prevent bacterial
infection, Also, to help the broad masses of the people have a correct understanding of the rational use of
antibiotics, we introduced to them that we used synthetic biology knowledge and bacteriophage therapy to
solve the problem of bacterial infection, which was welcomed by the masses and achieved the expected
publicity effect.
3 Freshman Orientation
We held lectures on synthetic biology and the experience of iGEM competition for freshmen majoring in
bioengineering. We introduced in detail the relevant knowledge, research frontier and future development
trend of synthetic biology, as well as our experience and experience in participating in iGEM competition.
This effectively stimulated their interest in synthetic biology and appreciated the charm of synthetic
biology. After the lecture, the students actively discussed our project, synthetic biology knowledge and
iGEM. We found that students were curious and interested in synthetic biology. We also encourage them to
participate in iGEM to understand and learn more. Meanwhile, in future research work, they should actively
think about the impact and value of responsible, innovative and feasible projects on society.
4 Campus Promotion
Every year our school will hold a club gathering which is called 100 regiments in one battle to introduce
and promote all the associations in the university to all the freshmen. This year, we DUT iGEM participated
in this activity. We shared our iGEM competition and some wonderful activities for students. We also got
many people understand the role and significance of synthetic biology, which could help us solve many
practical problems, and attracted hundreds of people to participate in our iGEM community for further
learning and understanding. Meanwhile, we introduced the content of our project to them and explained why we
adopted the our method to reduce antibiotic abuse. After that, we also interviewed many students randomly to
get their feedback and opinions on our project, which was of meanings.
5 Media Campaigns
Today, with the rapid development of the mobile Internet era, we are in a new era of information explosion
and knowledge wealth creation. We use new media to follow the trend and propagate our project. In order to
popularize our iGEM project and promote the knowledge of synthetic biology, we have made videos and posted
on our WeChat public account and Bilibili to get people’s attention in a variety of ways. Meanwhile, we have
done science popularization on rational use of antibiotics and bacteriophages. Our publicity has also been
widely conceded.
