LINKS_China, a group of enthusiastic high school students, worked extremely hard on improving the production of pilis, testing on more pilis to obtain bigger output, innovating the hardware configuration to stabilize power supply in difference environment situations. They keep continuous effort to solve the energy problems based on engineering-oriented solution paradigm throughout the whole year.
Instructors
Our main instructor, Boxiang Wang managed and led our team’s progress from supplementing knowledge of synthetic biology to final wiki guidance. He scheduled and instructed us about experiments. Even with the impediment, Wang still encouraged us to find more solutions and resort to professional people for advice which shed a light on our trails. Being an experienced instructor, Wang offered us valuable suggestions and work with us to collect inspiration and formulate a blueprint for our project. He also accompanied us working labs till midnight. Besides, Wang pushed us to be academic but also creative about videos and wiki design.
Yuhan provided most lab supports, instructions on experiment protocols, and supervision of our operation in detail. She also helped with fixing our problems with her experience in labs.
Qing Liang (Suzan) is our coordinator who gathers people together and explores each person's strength. Liang also oversaw our team's process, making sure that each plan works out accordingly.
Acknowledgement
This unprecedented year makes our PICACHU project hard to carry out: we have members locked down in the USA who have no chance to meet other members in person, and we are mainly cooperating online which is a unique and new experience to everybody. But with our determination and enthusiasm, LINKS_China team members confront the difficulties during the energy problems solving process, worked as a whole, and accomplished this amazing project.
The following are the major works that each of us contributed.
Xibei Liu(Brooklyn) has done great jobs for all aspects of our project, most significantly about part design. She spent the whole summer in the lab, and has an insightfulness for our second generation of hardware’s designing because her involvement is one of the highest in this project.
Minzhe Yang (Kevin) spent a large amount of time in the lab to build or plasmid and other experiments with Aaron. Kevin spent most of the days in lab in March, April and May when returned from USA for Spring Break and Epidemic spreading days. Aaron spent most of the days in the lab in June, July and August. As a boarding school student, he has travelled between two cities every weekend since September till now.
Zijing Wang (Mesue) and Zhongguo Wei (Marie) provided lots of ingenious art design together. Particularly Marie is extremely efficient in coming up the artistic design of team’s art in promotion video, wiki, educational kit, team uniform, and more. Meuse researched about potential topics and application, performed experiments about plasmid construction, electrode making, and directed the promotion video and introduction video. She also drew animations and illustrations to depict our project and involved in human practice like event holding.
Shangyi Zhu worked in America, coded, wrote and edited wiki contents(html coding and content writing); created videos for iGEM meetups; produced soundtrack for both promotion video and room escape video game; summarized scientific articles; wrote emails for HP communications; managed the team.
Qidang Ye (Stephen) conducted lots of labs with Aaron, and with Johnny and Carl, they tested various forms of battery design. He stayed in the lab till the midnight since the wiki’s due time comes. He is responsible for the “result” parts. He takes the responsibility well as the experiment team leader.
Yiyang Jiang (Mike) and Wency Suo researched a significant amount of papers, and Mike brought up this Type IV conductive pili.
Jiajun Liu (David )L. featured in our educational videos directed by Carl.
Tianshuo, He (Carl) has directed, edited videos, engaged in some design work like drawing for the video game. He has also taken lots of job in lab to increase the production of our pili for months. In the hardware team, He tested the batteries' voltage and current in a variety of conditions.
Yifei, Wang (Eve) reached out to specialists in the relating field to explore the potential application of our product as HP leader. She organized the outdoor trip for team member to meet and talk to the people working in the environment protection organization, open-resource hardware companies, and demonstrate our products to test out the reaction from those experts. She also organized the education workshop for the young people.
Wency Suo conceived the educational kit, and also research a lot about product prospects in America.
Mingxi Li (Leo) plays the main role in the hardware and modeling designing even he is stuck at USA. May participated in the third generation of PCB design when she returned from USA.
Zixiang Dai (Johnny) - involved in experimentation of materials and prototyping of hardwares; designed and created presentation posters and power-points; meetings with potential collaborators; design of visual elements; video (Vlog/Promotion/Final) editor, soundtracking, and captioning; involved in team created video game (coding); Minor wiki tweaks; Responsible as product management leader.
Jiaxi Wei (Josh), the group member for both Experiment group and Human Practice group, contributing to obtain and compile plenty of experimental data and video shooting, including the promotion video and many other video clips.
Hongru Zhao ( David Z.) , writer of supporting entrepreneurship, Human Practice team member, lab team member contributing to the purification and expression of PilA monomers.
Yu Chen Zhao(Zane), mainly responsible for conducting experiments such as gel electrophoresis, extracting plasmid, and pili culture. Finded several resources(videos, websites), translated information(Team Intro, illustration), and constructed part of our Wiki(4 genes). Also participated in video filming.
Lida, Bruce, Fion, provided helps in many experiments and human practice, mainly responsible for conducting experiments such as gel electrophoresis, extracting plasmid, and pili culture. Found several resources(videos, websites), translated information(Team Intro, illustration), and constructed part of our Wiki(4 genes). Also participated in video filming. Bruce did a great job for the measurement of the pili extraction.
More importantly, we want to acknowledge the generous help from
Professor Derek R. Lovely who gave us the advice to explore more about the hardware
Professor Yao Jun who granted some valuable suggestions on improving the conductivity
Professor Qin who also recommended us some alternative solutions to the resistance problem
Personals from Dapeng Leucadendron Floridum Wetland Park who affirm the use of our battery
Cong Xu who provided inspirational thoughts in designing hardwares and feedbacks on improvements of each generation of hardwares' performances
Violet Su who introduced us to Cesar and many mind-opening uses
Cesar Jung-Harada who offered some insights to a specific application on Marine Litter Detective
Professor Hei Baoqin who stressed the need for relatively high voltage compared to our current production
Xiu Yao, Xinyou Chang, Yaxuan Liu, Yike Yang, and Ruoheng Li as our advisors
KEYSTONE-2020, SEHS-China, and SZU-China as mutual learning partners
Thanks to Li Qiang and Li QianQian for their technical support on wiki construction.
