How we affects the world and how the world affects us

Overview

We all want to do things in our lives that can make a difference in the world - whether it is to educate children, treat or prevent diseases, or even to promote the arts. We share this yearning desire to do something meaningful, to leave our mark on the world. However, doing so requires a base of evidence beyond our own understanding and experience, evidence about how the situation really is in real life, and evidence about how to change things for the better. This evidence is sorely needed to enhance our own knowledge and decision making, but most importantly, to convince others. We need to be able to convince those with the authority and resources to accomplish our aims, or those with opposing views who stand in our way.

Hence, when developing our project, we knew we had to be responsible in conducting our project research with care and foresight and ensure that our project is able to do good in the world. As we all know, innovations that succeed in the laboratory doesn’t mean it can be applied to the real world. To bridge the gap between lab and life, we realized we had to work together with a variety of stakeholders - from the research end to the consumer end.

We first had to identify the challenges our project might help solve. To meet this challenge, we engaged with potential users and stakeholders to understand their needs and wants, and incorporate them into our project. We are thus able to tailor our project to meet these demands, altering our project design and execution in the process. Once our initial project plan has been completed, we can move on to the next phase - commercialization. To ensure our project has the best possible chance of success in the real world, we examined the impact and feasibility of developing, scaling and commercializing our project. By engaging with different stakeholders in the industry, we are able to understand how our project can fare in the real world, and what steps need to be taken in order to establish our project in the future. We also launched several outreach projects in order to raise awareness of both glaucoma and synthetic biology, since we believe that it is something that everyone deserves, and need to know.

“After all, each of us can make a difference, but together, we can make a change.”
