At 9:00 a.m. Beijing time on May 16, 2020, “Voice of Life:interview with researches“ was held on hopin platform initiated by Nanjing China and jointly organized by Fudan, NJU China and ZJU China. The participants included Professor Zhong Jiang from Fudan University, Professor Chen Xi from Nanjing University and Professor Chen Ming from Zhejiang University.
Professor Zhong Jiang focused on three questions: the relationship between personal research field and synthetic biology, microorganisms as promising genetic engineering systems and the role of microorganisms in synthetic biology. Professor Zhong Jiang said that his research field of viruses is driven by synthetic biology in terms of cognition and application. Under the general premise of ensuring biological safety, the application of virus research can be extended from disease prevention to pest control in agriculture. In terms of protein production, besides the traditional chassis organisms such as Escherichia coli and Pichia pastoris, viruses also have official applications in protein production concerning special hosts. Professor Zhong Jiang also mentioned that although microorganisms were not taken seriously in the early development stage of molecular biology, with the discovery of crispr-cas9 and other technologies, currently microorganisms have played an essential role in the field of synthetic biology.
Professor Chen Xi gave us an introduction of the organic relationship between cell information transmission and exosomes. He believed that in the current scientific research work, we may increase the production of exosomes, or construct more effective artificial exosomes, so as to realize the application of BioBricks in the project. Short as the history of exosomes research is, there are still many mechanisms remains unrevealed. However, it is undoubtable that exosomes, as an important part of basic research, will embrace a bright future. In addition, Mr. Chen also summarized his experience in guiding iGEM project for many years. He believed that iGEM not only trained the students' scientific research ability, but also provided a good platform for students to exercise their innovative and social ability. He advocated every people who watched the activity should pay attention to the connection of practical ability and enhancement of project applicability, in order to better disseminate the core of synthetic biology.
Professor Chen Ming pointed out that iGEM competition is highly organized, and the team has experienced the change both in judges and venues. Professor Chen Ming pointed out that under the special circumstances of this year, the rules may change, and all teams should be prepared to deal with possible changes. At the same time, Professor Chen Ming cheered for all participating teams. He believed that iGEM has great potential, and the achievements of synthetic biology will become the foundation of a considerable part of research and application in the future. Students should keep their momentum and work hard for this year's iGEM competition.
Nanjing China members initiated the proposal in early preparation stage of the activity. HP team contacted NJU China, Fudan and ZJU China teams. Having establishing a cooperative relationship, we organized several meetups and worked out the activity flow together. After many discussions and modifications, the host was selected, and an invitation was sent to the interview professors to formulate the interview draft. Nanjing-China is responsible for the production of posters and the publicity of official account. During the activity, ZJU China is responsible for the whole process of video recording and activity recording, and completes the activity summary in the end of the activity. All the students in every group felt satisfied with the cooperation, which not only enhanced their understanding of synthetic biology, but also proposed that they could further communicate and cooperate to provide help for their respective projects.
