Modelling

This year we built upon and improved what was already made available by The University of Nottingham's 2019 iGEM team. This year the full structural modelling files have been uploaded onto the wiki for future teams to be able to download our model and run theoretical experiments in COBRApy. We have also made our MATLAB kinetic model code available to download from our wiki. This code allows for the reproduction of our work as documented in the modelling report and on the awards page.

The Podcast Guide

Recording a podcast (during the pandemic) is so much easier than it seems! Here’s a guide on the basics and what NOT to do. For more information regarding our podcast goals and ideas, please check out our Education page.

Step 1: The Basics

If you want to record a podcast here are a few things that you need:

  1. Script*
  2. Recording device and one laptop/phone
  3. Editing tools
  4. External microphone (optional)
  5. Platforms where you want to upload

*This will ensure that the episode covers all the topics you aim to discuss whilst minimising awkward pauses.

Step 2: Get Recording!

  1. Find a quiet place with minimal background disturbance (This will make the editing so much easier!)
  2. Set up a call with the participants (if any) on Microsoft teams/Zoom etc. on one of your devices (laptop/phone)
  3. On the other device open the available recording application such as the iPhone’s Voice Memos or Android’s Voice Recorder (YOU CAN EVEN USE AUDACITY WHICH IS FREE AND EXTREMELY SIMPLE TO USE)
  4. Ask all the participants to start the audio and clap all together at a specific count (e.g. count of 3). This allows the audios to be synced much more smoothly and makes editing a whole lot easier
  5. Then start going by the script or pointers and have fun!
  6. At the end of the recording get everyone to upload their individual recordings on a common file on google drive for instance

Step 3: Editing & Uploading

There are several editing software packages available you can use to perfect the recording. We will be talking about the one that we used which was garage band!

Using Garage Band

  1. Click on the empty project link and choose audio (with the microphone symbol) option for the track type

  2. Export all the saved audios onto garage band and align them according to the clap
  3. Listen through the clips and delete any awkward silences. This can be done by clicking on the centre of the recording to get the plus sign which you can drag until where you want to delete (can also be used to re-record)
  4. The last step is optional but fun! On garage band, there is an options bar at the side for the audios labelled voice. Once you click on it there are a handful of options to choose from which make the vocals sound much more professional. This can we applied to all the audios or just one. (We used the narrative voice!)

  5. Uploading is done in one easy step using Anchor. It’s a free application that uploads your podcast to several platforms including Spotify and Apple music. All you have to do is create an account and the rest is pretty straight-forward
