Outreach

Nottingham iGEM Minecraft Game

As part of our outreach this year, we wanted to target the younger generation. We decided that we needed to create something that could be re-used every year with a new group of students, and that would continue from any presentation we gave to schools about iGEM and synthetic biology. This goal still holds true today, but with the 2020 pandemic almost all schools closed in the UK, and the status of their reopening remains unknown. Luckily, we have an ace up our sleeves with the Minecraft adventure map we have created. This map will be made available for anyone to download at any time, not just for schools. We plan to send an invitation to schools to play this map with their classes regardless of whether we can perform a virtual or physical presentation.

Nottingham iGEM Podcast

In the midst of a global pandemic, it became increasingly difficult for us to come up with a way to reach out to people without in-person interaction. That's when the idea came to us, a way in which we can talk to hundreds of people without risking lives. That's how we came about with the idea of a Nottingham iGEM podcast in which we aim to bring about awareness about our project related to neurodegeneration along with teams and their project and how we have been utilising synthetic biology to combat such issues. Additionally, we also discuss ways in which we have dealt with the obstacles the lockdown has brought about. All in all, we aim to potentially educate and spread awareness of topics dear to us and the importance of synthetic biology through our podcast.

Tough Mudder X The Cure Parkinson's Trust

Founded in 2005 by four people living with the disease, the Cure Parkinson's Trust (CPT) takes a patient-centred approach to funding innovative projects and inspirational scientists, working to modify the progression of Parkinson’s and to find a cure.

CPT believe that they are closer than ever to delivering treatments that for the first time will slow, stop or even reverse the progression of the disease. Your valued donation will help them get there.

The Virtual Toughest Mudder takes the place of Europe's Toughest Mudder - adapted for a social-distanced and lockdown friendly home obstacle course. Taking place on over two days, the event begins at 8PM Saturday 22nd August and the time stops at 8AM Sunday 23rd August!

It consists of 12 hours of 5 mile laps overnight with Tough Mudder’s signature 'homemade obstacle' challenges sandwiched between each lap. It is expected to be a challenging and daunting effort; Tough Mudder themselves have drawn up a plan to Lap 13 - expecting no one to further that effort.

We will not longer be accepting donations, but you can still check our fundraising page and our progress throughout the journey here!

Nottingham iGEM Youtube channel

To make it easier for potential wiki readers to digest our project, we created a series of Q&A videos which we uploaded to YouTube along with our Minecraft trailer. The hope is people passing by, or those that have been directed to our wiki may be more likely to watch a 45 second video compared to reading a chunk of text. After watching the video, they are directed to learn more about synthetic biology, our project and iGEM through further Q&A videos (11 in total) or by moving on to read our wiki content.
