The goal of our project is to realize the storage, evolution and visualization of music based on DNA storage and gene editing technology. DNA storage is an emerging and promising field. Almost everyone will marvel at its power and charm, and our work can be said to be a small step in this field. We hope that our project can bring researchers some new ideas and attract new generations to explore the mystery of DNA storage. We can totally say that all scholars can be our end users.
On the other hand, our results are for everyone. We can turn specific DNA sequences into music or pictures through websites, apps, applets, etc., so that they can appear in every corner of our life as artworks. From this perspective, anyone can become our end user. It can be said that the combination of DNA coding and music and pictures is of great significance in the process of integrating science and aesthetics. It solves scientific problems with another way of thinking, and makes science come into life.
At the beginning, we divided the team into coding group, scoring group, experiment group and visualization group. We held weekly meetings to exchange progress and cooperate with each other to prevent disconnection. Although limited by the external environment, we have completed the early task in an orderly manner. After the epidemic situation in China was quickly controlled, we carried out HP and experiment (see Lab), which not only expanded the influence but also improved and perfected our project.
In the process of project implementation, we are faced with a series of challenges:
In the early stages of the project, the barriers to online communication between team members need to be overcome.
Different from the traditional project, we need to consider the music backgrounds, programming skills and aesthetic levels of the team members.
Because of the pandemic, we were unable to enter the campus laboratory, it was necessary to find another laboratory.
How to select the mutant enzymes? What to do if the fitness function fails to achieve the expected effect? We need to deal with a variety of details.
Security challenges: we need to do a good job in personal safety when carrying out human practices; we need to ensure others’ genetic information security; laboratory safety needs special attention.
We have been facing challenges, we have been solving difficulties, we are a strong team.
