The interviews allowed us to build our project. We started only from the very generic subject of green tides, asking for general information from professionals, then our project became more and more precise as the interviews went on.
When we started the project, we wanted to find out the public's knowledge about the green tides, its causes and what is doing with them. Do they know that Green Tides is in France and other countries? That Green Tides has an impact on the environment?
To gain insight, we decided to conduct a survey. We focused on the general public's opinion. We asked about their knowledge of the green tides, the causes, the algae involved, places affected, their danger, their impact and their revaluation.
Curious about the answer
Since none of the team members had worked on green tides before, we had to learn more about them. Reading scientific papers and discussing with experts was necessary as a first step, but it was not enough. We needed to know more about the public’s opinion. That's why we chose to conduct a survey in French on Facebook.
The first survey was targeting a general public in order to discover what people know about their knowledge of the green tides, the causes, the algae involved, places affected, their danger, their impact and their revaluation. Given that most of us are students, a large proportion of the answers came from students. However we also have answers to the survey from people with different jobs and notions of biology. In total, for this survey, we obtained 450 responses. Here are represented the questions/answers obtained revealing the general public's knowledge:
According to these graphs, most of them knew the green tides. However, many do not know which algae is involved (89,9% of responses). They do know that green tides are a huge problem for us and the planet. They also seem to be interested in our project because they give us their email to know the answers for this survey based on our research and interviews with actors.
We needed to ask questions and inquire with professionals during this year. Many have responded to our requests and have given us interviews.
This year, we were planning to participate in several events to share our project.
Unfortunately they were cancelled due to the epidemic that we have faced and are living through.
We were supposed to participate in the spring of the assos and the science fair. For this a member of the team has made a brochure, we share it with you. On it, we explain what the iGEM competition is, the context of our project with a part on green tides and one on their revaluation. Then the different projects of the Aix Marseille team, this participation will be the 7th.
