Collaborations

iGEM Israel - Meetup

At the beginning of this iGEM season, an Israeli meetup was arranged by TAU Israel team, with the aim of getting to know one another and cooperatively brainstorm over the different manners in which we can utilize the iGEM platform to influence others, make an impact on society, and look for potential collaborations.

In addition, we gathered together to think of an idea on how to raise the awareness of underrepresented groups in Israel, and also encourage their integration in science.

After the presentation session, we were divided into 3 groups and thought about the ways to achieve our above-mentioned goals.

Finally, we have decided to interview inspiring people who are involved in science and also came from underrepresented groups, and produce videos out of it that will be published on a dedicated YouTube channel. Following the rise of Black Lives Matters, we joined the iGEM foundation in the work against systemic racism in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). We looked and asked around only to realize that the issue of the underrepresentation of minorities in STEM (especially in academia) has never been clearer and upsetting.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) - Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University

This year, Cayetano Heredia University wanted to highlight the importance of science in society, not only as a knowledge resource but also as a developmental tool to solve a variety of problems. They wanted to show how iGEM Projects contribute to achieve the SDG's (Sustainable Development Goals), in order to raise awareness about the benefits and importance of scientific approaches to achieve sustainable development.

To do so, each iGEM team received the chance to make a small infographic of their project with a provided template, says what they are doing to promote some of SDG goals, and by that, contribute to the movement #SinCienciaNohayFuturo (#NoScienceNoFuture). This movement began in Spanish-speaking countries to raise awareness concerning the need for scientific research to keep thriving as a society, particularly for developing countries.

We contributed from our knowledge and experience that we gained during the project, and by that we gave a better understanding of some relevant SDG's goals.
