Background research



1. We interviewed frontline medical staff, introduced our project to them, and listened to their opinions and suggestions. Through research, we learn that although the current nucleic acid testing time for the new coronavirus has been greatly shortened, it still takes a long time for first-line medical institutions to return from sampling to the return of results. If there is another large-scale outbreak, medical resources and isolation sites will all face risk of burden, leading to a safety hazard. At the same time, the operating cost of nucleic acid detection is very high, and the sensitivity and accuracy need to be improved. Interviewees consider the project we developed a portable detection device which will enhance the ability to detect a large number of sample in a short period, reduce the false probability of occurrence of negative, whch will help them to a large extent. Therefore, they look forward to our dual detection method for nucleic acid protein and the combination of microfluidic chip and smartphone applet. These information inform that our project can fill some of the current gaps and has huge market potential.



2. We spoke with community workers, they mentioned that during the epidemic prevention and control various positions in community lack labor force, many of the staff being quarantined lead to more intense work. After listening to our project introduction, they first expressed their concern about the difficulty of developing the device out of consideration of virus mutation, and also expressed full confidence and expectations for our project because the device can make nucleic acid detection in the community a reality, which will greatly reduce the pressure on medical staff and community workers, whether for global epidemic trend and epidemic prevention and control is of great significance.




3. We interviewed volunteers for epidemic prevention and control, and they said that they were deeply touched by the success and difficulties they encountered during their volunteer activities. They old us that there are still some families in some areas that cannot afford the cost of testing, and the current testing methods require high professionalism. If our project develops a portable device, it will greatly improve the testing efficiency and reduce the pressure on all aspects of society.




4. Professor Deng Yulin of Beijing Institute of Technology has helped us with inspiring ideas and the general thinking of this project. He has shared with us the application of synthetic biology and its deeper meaning, and given much advice in team building and safety management.




5. Associate professor Lv Xuefei brain-stormed with us and did some correction on part of our project.




6. Associate professor Li Xiaoqiong has offered a variety of insightful ideas about the combination of our hardware and biology and the necessary technical support.






Program improvement



1. By participating in the iGEMer meeting in Beijing, the BIT team received many suggestions from the participating teams. These suggestions helped our team realize the possible problems in the biological and hardware parts, and conducted preliminary investigations on related problems to find solutions.





2. CCIC helped us a lot. By introducing our project to other teams at the CCIC conference, we listened to a lot of opinions, which helped us think about our project better, and helped us make new designs for the content of the hardware part. Solved some problems encountered at the beginning of the project.



3. We participated in the meeting:《virus Police-From scouting to arresting》 organized by SMMU-China (retired). In this meeting, we received professional suggestions from other teams that also perform new coronavirus detection. These suggestions help us to improve It has perfected our biological principles and hardware parts.





4. We paid a return visit to the doctor we interviewed before, told her about our project, and listened to her opinions on our biological part.



5. In order to draw more suggestions from the ongoing projects of major companies to help our projects improve, after the team BIT's investigation, we decided to take the opportunity of related courses to interview CapitalBio and learn about their COVID-19 Mobile Laboratory to help us better Carry out your own project. 6. We communicated with the team BIT_China in the middle of the project to help each other better improve the project.






Education



1. In order to better help us conduct online science promotion in the future, and also to help other teams, we combine the online science promotion work done in the past and compare the traditional Weibo and the emerging bilibili two platforms through research. Come to provide suggestions for future online popular science publicity.



2. We united SCUT-China and UESTC-Software to form "Science for All Alliance". We welcome every team to join and work together to do a better job of popularizing science!





3. In order to ensure that our popular science promotion work can form an influential brand, we have reached a cooperation with the BIT_China team to discuss how to attract team members to continue to participate in iGEM. Through questionnaire surveys, we determined the purpose of most iGEMers participating in iGEM, and established a "course to iGEM" and "student to teacher" system to better train team members and other students who did not participate in iGEM. Reserve talents for the next year.




4. "course to iGEM" and "student to teacher":We have prepared a series of open courses, including igem introduction, literature search, microfluidic chip, etc. Through these courses, we introduced igem and synthetic biology to more students, helped them understand relevant knowledge and developed an interest in synthetic biology. The next year, they will be a good iGEMer. Also, we put the videos in our bilibili account





5. We held the first team BIT badminton game and welcome all students from the college to participate. Through this competition, we not only conveyed the purpose of exercising and improving immunity, but also introduced igem and synthetic biology to the students participating in the competition during the break.




6. We held an outfield event to introduce igem and synthetic biology to students from other majors, aiming to attract students with more professional backgrounds to participate in igem and provide more ideas in different disciplines.




7. We and team BIT-China jointly launched a series of coffee time with the goal of cultivating future iGEMers to help freshmen understand iGEM.
