Project development

The project was developed with the full team in February. During these meetings, our regular supervisors were frequently present to provide important insights into what would or would not be possible. Throughout the months that followed, the project was often modified after receiving feedback from stakeholders.

Who helped us?

Pieter van Maldegem - for giving us the inspiration for the project.
Cécile van der Vlugt (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) - for discussing the safety of our project.
Anton Varekamp - for giving us a tour on his potato farm.

Wet Lab

The wet lab team consisted of Andreea, Sucharita, Julius, and Reuben. Although it was impossible for them to perform actual experiments in the lab this year, they planned out every experiment needed to prove the principle of RootPatch and performed the in silico cloning for the parts required for RootPatch. Moreover, they brainstormed about the weaknesses in RootPatch and developed alternative approaches in case the original plans fail. Their work can be found on the Engineering page.

Geert Smant (University of Wageningen) - for providing insights into nematode research.
Sjefke Allefs (Agrico Research) - for showing the world of potato crop development to us and helping in the development of our project.

Dry Lab

The dry lab team consisted of Fennie, Ronja, Ilya, Sietse, and Jelle. Ilya and Sietse worked together on a model to study the behavior of the nematodes and to estimate what is required of RootPatch to be efficient. Fennie, Ronja, and Jelle looked into the bacteria population of RootPatch and how sensitive it is under different environmental conditions. Both models were made with the frequent feedback of Sander van Doorn. The results of their work can be reviewed on the Model Page.

Siewert-Jan Marrink (University of Groningen) - for giving us access to a bachelor modeling course.

Outreach

Jaya, Kim, Julius, and Zain made an online lesson series (two times 45 minutes) about the fundamentals and application of the CRISPR-Cas system and the ethical implications of genetic engineering. They did this in collaboration with several educational institutions in the Netherlands (Science LinX, NEMO Kennislink). The online series is released on the free platform “Thinkific” and they integrated it into the education of several high schools in the Netherlands. Their work can be found on the Education page.

Tom Naber (University of Groningen) - for providing us with an external microphone.
Thomas Tan (University of Groningen) - for making the team photo.
We are also thankful for the associations and independent producers who gave us permission to use their animations for our course. They added immense value to the themes we were discussing throughout the lessons.

Sponsoring

Sietse, Reuben, Ilya, and Jelle were part of the sponsor team with the responsibility to require the funding for the project this year. Sietse and Jelle focused on the Dutch companies while Reuben and Ilya contacted mainly international sponsors.

Wiki development

The Wiki was developed by Julius and Jelle. While Jelle designed the pages, Julius set up the structure, and together, they coded all the different pages. The text for the pages was delivered by the other team members.

Animation team

The animation team consisted of Alex, Job, and Arne. Having no biology or science background, they were first educated by Jelle to learn about genetic engineering and the details of our project. The animations were made with frequent consultation with Kim, Julius and Jelle. The narration of the animated 2-minute promotional video was done by Fennie. Check out the promotional video here!

Video team

The presentation was designed and filmed with efforts of many team members. Fennie and Sietse were our presenters, who delivered the project to you. Sushi, Reuben, and Ilya wrote the presentation script, while Ilya also designed the slides. Videos, filmed by Ronja, were montaged and finalized by our animation team.
