Week 1

We had an online meeting to know each other. And we developed a framework of our project. We decided to start by Human Practice.

Week 2

We learnt some essential concepts and technologies in synthetic biology. Moreover, we had an investigation on the past iGEM teams and we learnt the application of synthetic biology to solve various problems. We developed a study plan: each team member will be responsible for a bo-ok or an article, and we will have weekly online meetings to share what we’ve learnt.

Week 3

We started to discuss on the topics for our project. Finally, we decided to chose between coral bleaching and medicine. We were separated into two groups to investigate the two topics.

Week 4

The two teams did some researches on the two topics and did two presentations. And the two teams started to develop the framework of Human Practices separately.

Week 5

The two teams did another two presentations on the two topics and presented their ideal frameworks about human practice. Finally, we voted and decided that we will work on coral bleaching. We then improved the framework of Human Practice. We were divided into the following working groups: investigation and research group, articles writing up group, story-making (video) group, and team communication group.

Week 6

We started to design a logo and Jun Wei gave us a lesson on how to chose patterns and colors. Several students provide their designs. The article writing-up group posed the first popular science article on genes on WeChat Official Accounts. The investigation and research group started an online survey about people’s opinions on coral bleaching. The story-making group started to do a video to introduce our team.

Week 7

Professor Pengcheng Fu gave us a lecture about the mechanics of coral bleaching and the applications of microfluidic chip. The team communication team had an online meeting with the team CLS_CLSG_UK and decided to collaborate on mathematic modeling, wiki construction, and lab experiments.

Week 8

The investigation and research group finished the survey and did a report to show their results.

Week 9

The team communication group had an online meeting with team UNSW, who also focuses on coral reefs. The article writing up group finished their second popular science article which helps the readers to tell coral polyps, corals, and coral reefs apart.

Week 10

This week we started the technical part of our project. The team is divided into two groups: biotechnology group and microfluidic chip group.

Week 11

The two teams did self-study on the two technical parts. And we had an online meeting to share our achievements of self-study.

Week 12

The article writing-up team finished the third popular science article on explanation of the coral bleaching.

Week 13

Dr. Wei Wei gave us a lecture on how to design and fabricate a microfluidic chip.

Week 14

Dr. Ruhao Sun gave us a lecture on how to complete a genetic engineering. And the biotechnology group started to design their own lab protocols. Rose Yang gave us a report on the results of self-study.

Week 15

The members in the biotechnology team finished their design of the lab protocol, and Dr. Ruhao Sun have some instructions on these protocols. Selina Fan and Cindy Lou did self-study report.

Week 16

We has an online meeting with Chuanliang Wu, the super-intendant of the Coral Research Institution in Hainan, China, to have a better understand of the current situation of corals in Hainan. Moreover, we decided to start the cooperation on lab experiments and the publicity of knowledges on coral bleaching and marine ecosystem. The article writing up group finished their fourth popular science article on the history and evolution of corals.

Week 17

We are about to start our lab experiments in Hainan. We had an online meeting to decide our schedules there.

Week 18 and 19

We had more discussion on the lab protocols and design of the probiotic. We arrived in Hainan_China and got to our lab. We finished the cultivation of zooxanthellar in vitro , the vgb gene inserted probiotic, and the experiemnts on microfluidic chip.

Week 20

We named our project CHLORIS means a god in Greek mythology. We attended a forum that host by St.Andrews on the topic "Will the GMOs shape the future of humanity?"

Week 21

We attend the CCiC, a lot of Chinese IGEM teams do presentations to show the study of their projects. We learned how to make our presentation profect.

Week 22

We finished making our promotion video.

Week 23

We had a academic exchange with a high school biology club, we did a presentation to show our project. Our advisers gave some suggests about the presentation and we made some improvement about our powerpoint.

Week 24

We divided the work of making our final presentation and started working on it.

Week 25

We kept doing our work for the final presentation.

Week 26

We uploaded our promotion video to our homepage. We finished designing the microfluidic chip of our project and we almost finished the experiment of the gene engineering part. We still kept doing our work for the final presentation.
