We are the third iGEM team from Hannover. This year, we are an interdisciplinary team of students
from Leibniz University of Hannover and Hannover Medical School, who have joined together in NIFE
(Lower Saxony Center for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development). Our team
consists of 16 highly motivated students from different fields of study: biology, biochemistry,
biomedicine, life science, nanotechnology and physics. We are actively supported by our supervisors
Prof. Alexander Heisterkamp and Dr. Stefan Kalies. Let us introduce ourselves to you:

Supervisors
Prof. Dr. Alexander Heisterkamp
Professor and group leader of the group Biophotonics at the Institute of Quantum Optics at the Leibniz University Hannover and at the NIFE in Hannover.
"I am happy to participate in iGEM as it is a great environment for students to be creative
and learn together as a team from one another. Being able to support those young people to
push the boundaries in synthetic biology and molecular biology by addressing their own
chosen challenges and problems is quite rewarding to me.“
Dr. Stefan Kalies
Post-doc at the Institute of Quantum Optics and sub-group leader for microscopical imaging and cell manipulation
at the NIFE in Hannover.
His main research focus is the application of various optical tools, including special kinds
of microscopy and laser-based cell manipulation, to better understand tissue regeneration
and cell repair. Additionally, he is interested in a variety of biophysical topics and the connections to synthetic biology. He is
supervising, advising, encouraging and always motivating us and our lab work. In his free
time, he likes to play guitar and enjoys reading.
Instructor
Prof. Dr. Jan Faix
He is the group leader of the Cytoskeleton Dynamics group at the Institute for Biophysical
Chemistry at the Hannover Medical School. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms
driving actin turnover in vital cellular processes following an interdisciplinary approach.
He advised us during the cloning procedure and provided work material for our project.
