The Bluetooth Bacteria has many applications...

Our system for wireless controlled gene expression via an alternating magnetic field can be applied to research, industry, and medicine once it is further improved and perfected. As in optogenetics, our system is applicable as a research tool as a means of timing the expression and release of proteins for experiments and systems without a chemical inducer. Beyond research, our basic pathway can be used in industry as a means of controlling the location and release of biological adhesives or proteins in hard to reach locations such as in joints and piping. Similarly, the time-controlled expression of our bacteria can be used to regulate the release of drugs in medical patients. If the magnetic nanoparticles and the AMF-emitting device can be adjusted to be effective in a more portable format, this drug release application may be useful for chronic diseases and disorders. For example, migraine medication, which may need to enter the bloodstream to be effective, is typically taken only once symptoms appear. With quick stimulation of the Bluetooth Bacteria as an engineered probiotic can shorten the time between symptom and treatment. The Bluetooth Bacteria can even be applied to treating opioid addiction by permitting patients to access/control opioid release only while the bacteria are in their system and stimulated with AMF, allowing further regulation of opioid use.
