When we are here & Safety
This year, Our Worldshaper-Nanjing finished the project experiment under the guidance of the insrtuctors from Nanjing Normal University. Actually, we learned experimental basic precautions and safety knowledge during the spring, so we know that it is very important to it is really important to keep following the rules in the lab and remember to ask for help instead of doing all the things by our own while facing the problems. Only in this way, we can make sure our safety and avoid some dangers during the experiments.
Before really entering the lab and starting the experimental procedures, we also learned about the basic safety rules and common biological techniques in lab. After the training, we can be able to use most of the biological experimental equipment in the laboratory.
- The lab safety rules summary are as following:
- Always keep wearing the lab coats exam gloves while doing the experiment. If there is a need for special dangerous experiment, remember to wear special protective tools, such as safety goggle while touching the toxic materials.
- No personal food or belongings is allowed token into the lab.
- Always keep the work station clean and in order. Remember to return the lab equipment to its original places and clean all of the material that are used.
- Never touch other things in a non-contamination area with the gloves or coats of the lab on.
- Before the experiment, all the researchers in the team should be well-trained during all the procedures.Before the training of special equipment, the students should not touch them without the help of a qualified teacher. All the experiments and procedures should be kept authorized.
- Safety rules should be clearly read and followed during the whole experimental process.
- All the taps should be closed after finishing using them. All the electronic equipment should be turned off while leaving the lab. If there is some problems with the equipments, it should be reported immediately to the company. Gels like culture medium need to be kept from the sink. Solids are to be cleaned out.
- If there is a fire situation, all the power need to cut off while leaving the lab. This situation needs to be reported immediately.
- While the hands are wet, never touch electrical equipments.
- Flammable materials should be kept away from potential fires.
- Never taste or openly sniff the potential toxic materials. Perform manipulations of materials that may cause the exposure to corrosive materials. Never leave the reactions unattended.
- When touching the toxic materials, the safety gloves and other protective clothing are necessary for protection. While facing the accidents, always remember to clean the skin first and look for medical treatment.
- Any experiments that may contain radioactive or extreme-toxic materials need to be carried out under special care of qualified instructors and under special circumstances.
- In case of a biological spill, wipe up spill and clean the surface with an available, and suitable disinfectant and immediately wash exposed areas of skin with soap and water. Clean the experiment areas clearly, do not allow any out leak of any biological substances.
- Wear protective equipments such as eyewear to face shield while touching the radioactive experiments. The safety glasses should be kept during the whole experiment process.
- All the wasted materials need to be disposed according to the rules and in required areas.
