Extensive influence
We expect that we can connect with as many people as possible, not only online, but also face to face. We do not classify Synthetic Biology as something that just exists in the laboratory. On the contrary, it can be closely related to our daily life. So, we communicated with both the public and iGEMers in different ages from a lot of places.
Online Videos
To create a broader platform for synthetic biological interaction, we chose internet to be our medium. There is a cultural community and video platform in China called “bilibili”, in which young generations are highly concentrated. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we made some readily comprehensible videos to explain how novel Coronavirus invaded the human body, what contributions synthetic biology can make in this epidemic, and remind the public to make good personal protection and fight against the epidemic together. These videos have been played 1959 times up to now. Additionally, we also released these videos in Tencent video, which is also a video platform in China. We hope to connect with more people through these platforms.
Scientific Games with Children
It is commonly believed that children should be cultivated since childhood. Doing some scientific games is much more acceptable for children than giving them a lecture. Based on this principle, we created some really fascinating activities for children in kindergarten, allowing them to approach science indirectly. we came to Xiajiabian kindergarten with packs of colorful fallen leaves and give them some general knowledge about how chlorophyll turns into lutein at fall.
Scientific Games with Children
We organized students from 4 elementary schools (Jinqiao Elementary School, Wuqiao Elementary School, Daoxiang Elementary School and Yuhong Elementary School) to labs to give them an opportunity to do some easy experiments themselves, for example, making yeast-blowing balloons and painting on petri-dish.
Communications with Middle School Students
Because of the cultivation of our Alma Mater, we iGEMers with a strong mind to solve the biological problem and fight for a better world. To thank them for their previous guidance and to help more and more middle school students learn synthetic biology, even fall in love with it, we cooperated with four middle schools, which are the Alma Mater of 4 team members from four different provinces in China and mailed the periodicals to give them a wider horizon in the area of Biology. We also conducted an offline lecture in ZJFLS and our work was acknowledged by them positively.
Lectures given to College Freshmen
We invited the advisor of JNU-China who won the gold medal in the 2019 iGEM competition, Guoqiang Xu , and the leader of the team——Jiahua Fang, to give a lecture to the freshmen. The main purpose of the speech was to introduce synthetic biology and promote the iGEM.Many students showed their interest in the iGEM and synthetic biology after the meeting. Some of them asked deeper questions and we also offered our WeChat official account and bilibili account, welcoming them to follow us, with which they can learn more in this area.We hope that they can be a part of the iGEM community in the future.
Petri-dish Painting and Bio-Modeling Competition
Jiangnan University has a tradition to hold petri-dish painting competition to popularize scientific knowledge. For this reason, we cooperated with the Students’ Union to hold the competition together, which students from all of the schools in our university could join, learning how to use petri-dish, clean-bench properly and getting insight into how different types of microbes grow.
Petri-dish Painting Competition attracted many people
Apart from Petri-dish Painting, we also held the Competition of Bio-Modelling. In this competition, students made different types of crafts in groups. Most of them imitate microbes like bacteria, yeasts and viruses. “By making models of bacteriophage myself, I found out that the combination of science and art is a whole new field. Since technology developed rapidly these days and art kind of encountered a bottleneck, I think hitchhiking natural science is truly a good way for contemporary art to survive and boom in 21st century” ,said one of the students from School of Design.
