Team:NFLS/Education

In order to better promote our current project, the team combined with the campus characteristic - community, through the linkage with the school's IGEM community, held a variety of activities to popularize our research content.

In order to guarantee the effectiveness of the publicity, the team uses a variety of forms, including questionnaires, lectures, activities, and so on, to get a full and accurate understanding of the public's attitudes towards biology and future expectations, which arouses our urge to contribute to the promotion of biology. The target audience is mainly consist of students, who will stimulate the progress of society in the future. We realize that now biology is considered is much less important than math, science, but it is hidden everywhere in our life, from tiny insects, to our human body. Exploring the microscopic world is very interesting, can greatly expand our field of vision, so we should advocate for interest in Biology and think solve the problem in life related to biology together.

In the previous several activities, considering the effectiveness of face-to-face communication and frequent interaction, and the fact that all the team members were from the same school, the team decided to make full use of geographical advantages to go deeply into the campus and popularize the knowledge of synthetic biology in their spare time for students who have a strong interest in biology. When preparing for the speech, we took into account that the audience was middle school students who had a basic knowledge for biology but not very deep into it, so we introduced relevant knowledge gradually by introducing examples. We started with activities to activate the atmosphere, and then introduced the topic of synthetic biology through the application of biology in real life. After laying the foundation of background knowledge, we expounded the content of our project to the students in detail, making the speech easier to understand.

Before the speech, we cited several interesting examples of the application of synthetic biology, such as Tu Youyou's extraction of artemisinin and M. C. Escher's drawing with bacteria, etc. So, the students could feel the beauty of biology in person. In order to have a general understanding of students' understanding of biology, we set up the activity of answering questions about biology knowledge at the beginning of the activity, which was warmly responded, which also narrowed the distance, so that students spoke freely, actively participated in the following speeches, and kept asking questions.

After the popularization of synthetic biology, the next step for our team is to give a lecture about the project we are working on now. Afterwards, based on common interests and a series of previous activities together, we infected students with our own enthusiasm. The knowledge popularized in the past also stimulated their learning enthusiasm and promoted their interaction. This time, we established a mathematical model to verify the feasibility of the project and shared it with the students without hesitation. We not only relied on simple knowledge explanation, but also discussed and verified the data together. The knowledge we convey is not limited to promoting projects, but it expands the horizon and enriches the knowledge reserve for the vast number of biological enthusiasts and becomes one of the inspiration sources for their research in the future.

The team and team of Pharmaceutical University are also engaged in collaboration to complete friendly discussion and encouragement among each other. The audience is not only consist of students on campus. We also released a related survey on the Internet, providing as diversity of choices and open questions, which allows us to obtain information, including the mass’s understanding of basic microbiology knowledge, through a more comprehensive and interesting way. We wish that more and more people in the society can get acquainted with fuel cells and realize the existing problems, while providing valuable suggestions to us.
