Team:NFLS/Safety

GENERAL SAFETY

Our instructors and advisors have many years of experiences with molecular biology and iGEM, as well as working with organism and parts. He will be responsible for our safety and security in the lab. He and other experts gave us safety training and we have learned how to deal with potential risks. Moreover, our teacher Tingting Wu will also be responsible for our general safety.

LAB SAFETY

The two different lab spaces we use are classified as Biosafety Level 1 and Level 2, putting low or moderate risk on our community.

In general, the labs have professional equipment to ensure safety when we do experiments. All of our NFLS team members have received lab safety training about lab access and rules, equipment and technique choosing and operation, emergency procedures, physical and personnel biosecurity. Our members all obey to the laboratory safety regulations such as wearing lab coat and gloves in the experiments and disinfect our hands after the experiments. We have also put the wasted bacteria in specific bags and sent them to expects of taking bio-waste.

SPECIFIC BIOSAFETY

We use E.coli, DH5a, Homo sapiens, and HEK 293 cells. E.coli may cause immune response of the human body if it goes into the blood circulation of our colleagues, and it may cause Gastrointestinal disease if it goes into the Gastrointestinal tract of our colleagues. But the risk is very low cause this bacteria is Biosafety level 1. HEK cells may cause immune response of the human body if it goes into the blood circulation of our colleagues, and it may cause cancer if it goes into the blood circulation of our colleagues for extremely low possibility.

To prevent risks listing above, our team members have taken lab safety training and will obey all the rules to protect ourselves. If we are going to use our bacteria in the factory, we are trying to design a kill switch in order to kill cells if it is escaped from our device in order to protect our community and environment.
