iGEM provides us with a good opportunity to study the new concept of biology synthetic biology. As high school students, we have experienced a lot of hard to obtain knowledge inside and outside the laboratory. Not everyone has such a good chance to gain such experience, or to have any understanding of what synthetic biology is. Through our investigation, there are still many people who know little about synthetic biology. In order to get more people involved in our project, we decided to focus on public participation and education. We have designed different contents of public lectures for high school students and the public, and we also use micro signals to carry out the related knowledge of synthetic biology on the Internet.
During the implementation of the project, we visited BGI and were invited to introduce the key points of our project to the staff of the company and share the knowledge of synthetic biology. They also misunderstood their concept of synthetic biology at the beginning, thinking that it was synthetic gene sequence. Through our science popularization and propaganda, they came into contact with new and more advanced biological fields. last,We also had a full discussion and sharing of experimental technology, and we and each other benefited a lot.
In addition, Xinrong li of our team carried out a science popularization education of synthetic biology for the students in the biological laboratory of his school. First of all, the basic concepts and experiments of synthetic biology and the contents of iGEM competition were introduced. Then we introduce the content of our project.
Students are very interested in our iGEM project and have a lot of interaction with us. Through our lectures, they realized that synthetic biology is not a distant subject limited to laboratories, but a new discipline closely related to our life, which can be used to solve many problems in real life. As our team has done, even high school students can understand, learn and apply the knowledge of synthetic biology, and society provides us with such a platform, such as the iGEM competition.
Recently, WeChat has become one of the most popular ways to publicity. Because of this, we set up a WeChat Official account called “SD IGEM2020”. We use this account to publicize our program and progress.
We upload three tweets to our WeChat Official account during the August and October. Our topics include: the introduction of our team members; the log about our experiments; Collaboration and communication with other iGEM teams; our promotional video.
With the development of technology and the Internet, we can finish our tasks with easier and quicker ways. Take our questionnaire survey as the example. We got more than 213 feedback from different kinds of people during just about three days through the Internet. It would take us much longer time to collect the result of our survey if we hand the survey out to each person on the street. What’s more, the results collected were more variety and conclude more different kinds of people.
With the help of WeChat Official account, we learned more about how other people knew about Synthetic biology and our project from the comments and feedback followed the articles and diaries. And with the results collected by our survey, we found that most people knew little about what Synthetic biology was and what project we wanted to finish. This data and information helped us find the main publishing direction of our promotional video and following articles.
