Overview

Based on the experimental background of our project, we have produced a hardware called DCSC (Desert climate simulation cabinet) which can precisely simulate the desert environment for the cultivation of our cyanobacteria and symbiotic system.

Parts

  • NodeMCU * 1

  • 12V 30A Power * 1

  • Philips full spectrum growth light * 1

  • Resistance wire * 1

  • 12710 Semiconductor chilling plate * 3

  • Atomizer * 1

  • Solid State Relay * 3

Design

We use SOLIDWORKS software to model a cabinet like the picture on the right side and process each parts of it for the first step, and then choose proper ways to produce each parts, such as CNC machining and 3D printing. The shell of the cabinet has two layers. One is the outer shell made by PP, and we also use sponge and aluminum foil as an inner layer of insulation to keep temperature constant inside the cabinet.

The next step is to draw a circuit diagram and have a deep thought of how to drive these electrical parts and control them. 220V power is for the heating resistance and the full spectrum light, while 12V power is for the semiconductor chilling plates. The total power of the system is around 1200W. The temperature controlling part uses a closed feedback control system, which can precisely keep the temperature with heating and cooling parts and a temperature sensor.

Features

  1. Temperature range 0 ~ +50℃

  2. Temperature is well controlled in ±1℃

  3. Material of the heat insulation layer guarantees the cabinet can be heated evenly

  4. IoT platform for intelligent control, using app on mobile to remote control and monitor the state of DCSC(temperature, air humidity and soil humidity)

  5. Simulate the temperature and humidity of the city you set in real time(currently being developed)

  6. Recording historical data and visualization

IoT

We have built a remote controlling center for our DCSC on mobile phone based on the Blinker. Our cabinet can connect with the Internet by MQTT protocol. Therefore, when connected, it can accept command and upload data to the cloud, and you can both control it and watch data in app “Blinker” on your phone. The instruction of user interface is on the right.
