About Gaston Day School

Gaston Day School is a non-sectarian, college preparatory school for grades Pre-K through 12 where nearly 100% of graduating students attend a four-year college. Located in Gastonia, North Carolina and founded 1967, the school provides education to students from Gaston, Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Cleveland, and York counties, in addition to international students from various countries such as China and Germany. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Gaston Day is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Southern Association of Independent Schools, and the North Carolina Association of Independent schools and approved by the North Carolina Department of Education.

Anika Vercauteren

Anika Vercauteren

Anika is a senior at Gaston Day School. She is a co-leader and is in charge of the wet labs and helping students understand synthetic biology. She also loves working in the theatre as a stage manager almost as much as she does working in the lab with her teammates.

Kristine Huynh

Kristine Huynh

Kristine is a senior at Gaston Day School. She is the co-leader, head of wiki, and engineer on the team. She is also the creative mind that keeps our project looking superb. Aside from science, she loves painting, working with technology, and drinking boba tea with her friends.

George Luan

George Luan

George Luan is a co-leader and project manager of the team. He recently published a paper in a peer-reviewed journal. Besides research, he helps to coordinate the collaborations with other teams. Outside of the lab, he is also a popular standup comedian in the community, an artist, and a varsity runner.

Gloria Zhang

Gloria Zhang

Gloria is a senior at Gaston Day School. She works as a wiki developer and wet lab researcher. In addition to iGEM, she also devotes her time to robotics and wants to major in engineering. Aside from scientific studies, she loves classical music and serves as the first flute in the school band.

Kate Klinger

Kate Klinger

Kate is a junior at Gaston Day School. She works as a wiki developer, designer, and occasional researcher on the team. When she is not working with her teammates, she enjoys playing soccer, volleyball and creating art. Kate is also involved in Blutopia Literary Magazine, Spanish Club, International Club, and SpARTan Club.

Brooke Dillingham

Brooke Dillingham

Brooke Dillingham is a junior at Gaston Day School. She has been working on making the team website, videos, and researching for the team project. She also participates on the tennis team, swim team, and track and field, and she especially loves spending time with her dogs.

Neha Patel

Neha Patel

Neha is a junior at Gaston Day School. She is a researcher and plans to take charge of the wet labs. Outside of the science lab, Neha plays Varsity Golf and is a member of Spanish club and Math club. She is an avid reader who enjoys volunteering at the local library almost as much as she likes working behind the scenes at the school productions.

Eric Lan

Eric Lan

Tiancheng Lan, is a junior at Gaston Day School. He leads a small group to do the proposed experiments and implementations as well as help out with some of our lab work, research study, and human practice on the GDS iGEM team. In addition to iGEM, he loves to gain information about modern technology and news around the world in an effort to help people on a larger scale.

Frankie Ni

Frankie Ni

Frankie is a junior at Gaston Day School. He is a researcher and a member of the wet lab group. Outside of the lab, Frankie is a runner in Varsity Cross Country Team and Varsity Track and Field Team. He is also a fan of the technology, and he follows the newest information on semiconductor areas and companies like Intel and Nvidia.

Lydia Liu

Lydia Liu

Lydia is a sophomore at Gaston Day School. She is one of these members in the wet lab and a researcher in the team. Outside of the lab, Lydia is a member of the Math Club, Spartan Art club, and psychology club. She plays flute for the school's concert band. She is a runner in Varsity Track and Field Team and Varsity Cross Country Team.

Matilda Ziegler

Matilda Ziegler

Matilda is a sophomore at GDS. In iGEM, Matilda heads human practices & science education. She is also the team’s secretary. Outside of the lab, Matilda is the captain of the GDS quizbowl team and volunteers for Tri-County Animal Rescue. She is also involved in GDS' newspaper, The Circle, and literary magazine, Blutopia.

Yahoo Wu

Yahoo is a 10th grader who works as a researcher in the team. Apart from iGEM, she also likes drawing, paper folding, skiing and snowboarding. In her spare time, she loves to read novels and listen to music. Besides, she loves animals and has been enjoying volunteering at the animal adoption place for several times earlier this year.

Anne Byford

Ms. Byford is our wonderful advisor and soul of the team. She has been coaching iGEM at Gaston Day for over ten years. She is also a foster mom for a local animal rescue in the same way that she is our science mom.

Mrs. Heracklis has been the chemistry and environmental science teacher at Gaston Day for three years.
