About us:
Who we are?
We are The Filters. Our team's mission is to filter out some of the bad bacterial toxins and make the kidneys healthy. Our final goal is to filter the diseases and create a better life. In order to complete our mission, we are now researching how to use engineered probiotics to degrade p-cresol, thereby reducing the probability of getting kidney diseases.
Background
Nowadays, the occurrence of CKD is universal, and according to one of the top medical journals THE LANCET, it says that by 2017, the number of CKD patients in the world had reached 697.5 million, among which there are 132.3 million of Chinese patients with 9.5% incidence rate of CKD. In other words, on average, one out of every 10 Chinese is suffering from CKD. What's worse, CKD is pretty detrimental to human bodies, such as significantly increasing the incidence rate of getting heart and cerebrovascular disease. Based on such a serious condition, we are motivated to find a way to cure this disease.
Chronic kidney disease, known as CKD, has become one of a central problem that medical field focuses in 21 Century. With its high death rate and relatively high morbidity, CKD is the 9th leading cause of death in U.S. In addition, in 2017, over 500,000 patients received dialysis treatment, and more than 200,000 patients lived with a kidney transplant . Due to its potential danger to human, many scientists had done research about people awareness to CKD and appealed to people for their acquaintances to such disease. In early 21 century, a research conducted by Laura C. Plantinga, ScM, of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health had shown that the awareness of CKD in stage 3 only increased about 5% in five years. The awareness of stage 1 and stage 2 was half of that of stage 3
