Education & Public Engagement

From UCASers to people from all over China, from present explorers to future academics, We shared ideas to spark new curiosity of synthetic biology within and beyond the gates — the gate of UCAS, the gate of biology, the gate of science.

a)   Microbial painting

Through the preliminary registration and screening, students from all majors were invited to the biological laboratory to create paintings with microorganisms at the beginning of new term. The photograghs of their artworks could be kept by themselves. Our staff completed the microbial culture and photographic souvenirs of the works, voted on the Internet to select the most popular works and presented awards.

b)   Speech of H.pylori

As a part of UCAS Science Popularization Week, the Speech of H.pylori was held on the morning of October 11, 2020. The iGEM project team started from the introduction of H.pylori to its own project, and further extended to the present progress of synthetic biology research. Cooperated with Physics Circle and Mathematics Circle, we popularize the frontier knowledge of various disciplines to our UCASers.

c)    UCAS Encyclopedia Knowledge Contest

Our iGEM project team cooperated with the Students’ Union of UCAS to carry out the Encyclopedia Knowledge Contest on October 17, 2020. The contest questions consist of a wide range of disciplines, including the “Synthetic Biology” provided by our team. By organizing this contest, we encouraged and helped students to have a deeper understanding of our project and synthetic biology.

d)    Synbio Fair

On September 19th, we came to Beijing Keystone Middle School to further explain the project of our team as well as spread the concept of synthetic biology. We describe the details, purpose, significance and current progress of our project to our audience by constructing logical relationship.

In this fair, our audience is individuals in the Education field, including senior and junior high school students, lecturers and professors. For different audiences, we have also adopted different introduction methods and focuses. For our largest group of senior high school students, considering their certain knowledge background, we focused on introducing the whole framework of the project, showing our research ideas and proof methods from the framework of the project, hoping to show our whole project from a relatively macro level. For the lecturers who are family members, considering their need to treat H. pylori, we highlighted the key concepts of our project and the positive effects of our therapy. As for Professor Jin, considering his investigation on the academic nature of our research, we focused on the logical connection of our various parts and the role played by the detailed operation.

In addition to the students from our school, the iGEM team from Beijing 101 Middle School, The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, Beijing No.4 Middle School and Beijing Keystone Middle School also gave lectures. Each school has made a detailed elaboration of their own projects, and the schools have also exchanged experiences and suggestions. Finally, our poster was also displayed in the hall of Beijing Keystone Middle School, which further conveyed our project to more students in-depth.
