Partnership

China Synthetic Biotic Delta

CSBD

Invited by WHU-China, we joined along with Tongji-China to form a strong partnership. Coincidentally, members of the partnership were from three major cities with policy preferences on biotechnology industry, Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, thus we named the partnership China Synthetic Biotic Delta. Through several discussions, we determined our future collaborating directions: Modelling, Safety and HP.

CSBD-Discussion

a)   Modelling

In the process of modeling, everyone will have a different understanding and focus. While there are a thousand models in a thousand people’s eyes, a comprehensive model is essential for SHEEP therapy, thus the exchanging and complementing of ideas are of great importance. Since the simulation of the retention time of engineered probiotics in the body(stomach/intestine/lungs) is a common concern of the three teams, several efficient discussions between model groups of China Synthetic Biotic Delta were launched online, leading to the repair of loopholes and the birth of new ideas.

During the discussions, a previously ignored issue — the effect of mucosal clearance on the colonization-was discovered. Before discussion, we only considered the binary balance between H.Pylori and L.acidophilus. After discussion, we modified the model th a ternary balance by adding the influence of the human immune system into consideration.

Communication and collaboration in modeling also lead us to determine the focus of our therapy: ternary balance. We decided to make our therapy not only able to inhibit H.pilori, but also can maintain the balance of stomach microenvironment.

b)   Safety

It is a consensus that safety design is essential for microbial therapy. For all three teams, the concern of biosafety runs through the whole project, therefore the communication and cooperation on security strategy is of great benefit to approach a thorough security design.

This summer, the China Synthetic Biotic Delta had a detailed discussion on the possible forms of safety design in various aspects of microbial therapy. Through video conference, the experience on safety design of previous teams from the three universities were also shared. In-depth discussion of biosafety designs opened our minds and provided direction for further improvement of the project.

c)   HP

Due to the epidemic, the time left for us to communicate with entities was limited. Fortunately, we can depend on collaboration remedy this situation. The sharing of relevant expert resources and interview information between the China Synthetic Biotic Delta provided us more opportunities to access professional advice.

There is never too little advice on entrepreneurship. Lacking of experience and understanding of commercialization, collaboration provides us with a substantial help in quickly understanding relevant information and ultimately finding a way to achieve further transformation of achievements.

As soon as off-campus activities were permitted, the tree teams carried out research on biological industrial parks in the respective cities, moving from ivory tower to reality, understanding the shole process from laboratory to industrial production on the spot. We visited ZhongguanCun DaXing Bio-Medicine Industry Park, Zhangjiang Medicine Valley, Wuhan Biolake and gained a deeper understand of the development of bio-medicine industry in China.

This collaboration work was fruitful. WHU wrote a business plan for their engineered probiotics. We also managed to work out a implementation plan for our hardware.
