AshesiGhana

During the course of our project, we learned a lot that we would love to share with future iGEM teams. Think of us as older brothers and sisters looking out for our younger siblings.

Thus, this is our Contributions page dubbed 'Dear Future iGEMers'.

Jean

Dear Future iGEMers,

Please don't procrastinate! It comes back to bite you in the butt. And remember that teamwork makes the dream work. Don't do the work on your own. Always ask questions if you need help. Work hard and enjoy your team!

Dear Future iGEMers,

Please plan strategically so that you'll be prepared for any sudden changes that happen (like what happened with the COVID-19 pandemic). If you need help with planning, don't forget to reach out to people who can help you (like your PI and your instructors). And please, please, please, try your best to stick to the plan. But, if you can't, don't beat yourself up too much. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again.

Dear Future iGEMers,

Team work is key. Very, very key. No man is an island.

Also, set realistic targets that are SMART. They'll go a long way in helping your project.

Dear Future iGEMers,

Learn to adapt. And make sure that each person knows about the entire project so that you're better equipped to move across teams and help everyone and the project as a whole.

Chris

Dear Future iGEMers,

Put in your all to every part of the project, especially the model. There's a lot at stake.

Seek help when you're lost. The iGEM Community is more than willing to help you. You'll be alright.

Harry

Dear Future iGEMers,

Make sure you review the medal criteria as soon as you know what you're doing for your project. That way, you'll know what to prioritize. If you're not sure what each criterion entails, ask! It'll go a long way.

Be ready to work no matter what. Put in the effort because the project will not go on without everyone working together.

Communication is your best friend. Make sure to build a relationship with each other so that you feel like you're part of a family and not just a random team.

Dear Future iGEMers,

There's so much to learn during this season, from communication to team work to hard work to making sure that you're always on top of what you need to do. Don't ever feel too big to learn. Make sure that you humble yourself and ask for help when you need it. Everyone is more than willing to help.

It's also important to pull your weight. But if you find yourself struggling and flailing, talk to your team members and your team leaders. Everyone is ready to make sure that the whole team is moving. So just ask. You'll be glad you did.
