Ying

WHO ARE YOU?

Hi, I’m Ying, a master student of the University of Edinburgh majoring in biotech. I am new to modelling but hope can contribute some to my team. Also, I am one of those responsible for Human Practice.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

Travelling and dancing are my top hobbies, while photography becomes my new hobby. Besides, I am always crazy about the stories of historical characters, that’s the reason why I came to Edinburgh, the beautiful land belonged to Mary Queen of Scots.

WHY ARE YOU PARTICIPATING IN IGEM?

I’ve joined iGEM as an undergraduate in 2018, and it was such a beneficial experience making me want to join again. I am always excited to work with people from different fields and make interesting projects.

EDUCATION

The University of Edinburgh, UK --- Master of Biotech
Central South University, China --- Bachelor of Biomedicine

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

I’ve developed a transcription-only, E. coli cell-free model which can predict the dynamic flux of metabolites and enzymes with a given target.

WHAT PERSON DO YOU WANT TO BE/ASPIRE?

I hope that I can become an expert in one biological field oneday as there are so many fields attracting me.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS

Curious, moody, tidy

WHY DO YOU LIKE BIOLOGY?

Biology has been my favourite subject since I was a teenager. Biological sciences are such fascinating that always surprises us, and it always has something interesting and mysterious, inspiring us to explore. I used to study biomedicine as I hoped I could do something for the healthcare system, and now I am more confident that I could contribute to the medical system one day since I learned more about biotechnology and synthetic biology.

HOW YOUR PROJECT/DISSERTATION INTEGRATES WITH THE OTHER TEAM MEMBERS PROJECTS?

The model I developed can help with the optimization of our product in both productivity and sensitivity, and hopefully, it can also help with reducing the cost.

WHY IS YOUR PROJECT USEFUL?

My project can properly predict the performance of our cell-free sensing system, which is quite beneficial in the context of Covid-19, wet-lab work is hard to achieve.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY?

Synthetic biology is very neat and smart, which unites experts from different fields to cooperate and create amazing products.

WHY DO YOU THINK A UNIVERSAL BIOSENSOR IS USEFUL?

A universal biosensor is cool, guiding people to detect their targets towards specific environments. Accessibility enables more advantages and makes hard tasks simple.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT BIOSENSORS?

It hasn’t been widely applied yet but its advantages would make it become a mainstream tool in the near future.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS TEAM?

Our team is lovely, consisting of people from different countries and majors. I like the way we help with each other, and the fine atmosphere when making discussions.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW SUPERVISOR HELPED THE TEAM?

Our supervisors helped with building the initial ideas of our project, and continually helped with the progress we made.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW TEAM MEMBERS HELPED YOU?

People good at specific points, such as modelling helped me when I was struggling. Others always share papers and useful webs throughout our project.
