Ziyue
WHO ARE YOU?
Hi! I’m Ziyue Luo, a young biochemist at the UoE.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Reading: especially masterpieces and sic-fi
Writing: I’m writing my own poems, lyrics and novels
Hiking: Stay close to nature is a great way to relax!
WHY ARE YOU PARTICIPATING IN IGEM?
I joined the iGEM team to earn some precious experience from it since this competition
actually stimulates what a small biological company would work and to contribute to make
the world a better place using novel products inspired through the cooperation with biologists
from different majors.
EDUCATION
I obtained a Bachelor’s in Bioengineering in 2019 and recently I completed my dissertation
for my Master’s in Biochemistry that I started last year (2019) at the University of Edinburgh.
● University of Edinburgh Edinburgh, UK --- Master’s in Biochemistry
● China Agriculture University, China --- Bachelor’s in Bioengineering
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I worked to explore an enzyme that could be used to strength the network of dough in wheat
flour for my thesis.
WHAT PERSON DO YOU WANT TO BE/ASPIRE?
Did something meaningful and impressive, both in biology and also writing.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS
Rational, quick temper, mannered
WHY DO YOU LIKE BIOLOGY?
The biochemical reactions are quite like magic. So many mysteries are hiding behind those
complicated micro networks, which makes it incredible and also compelling. Therefore I
chose to study biochemistry.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY BIOLOGY?
Because I wanted to explore the incredible and marvelous biological world.
HOW YOUR PROJECT/DISSERTATION INTEGRATES WITH THE OTHER TEAM
MEMBERS PROJECTS?
My research worked out an efficient model for RNA extension and amplification that would
be modified to transfer the RNA sequences with limited concentration into strong fluorescent
signals.
WHY IS YOUR PROJECT USEFUL?
My research helps the whole project to be more powerful and efficient.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY?
It stimulates natural development of biochemical reactions to facilitate human daily life.
WHY DO YOU THINK A UNIVERSAL BIOSENSOR IS USEFUL?
Because it could be easily and quickly modified to be used in any circumstances. This
property would facilitate almost all related detection and assessment.
