One part of our product is AMPs, potential alternertives of antibiotics. So we started to investigate the widely concerned problem of antibiotic abuse. In general, microbial resistance occurs when germs develop the ability to continue to grow after drugs designed to kill them are applied. Antibiotic resistance has become an increasingly serious problem with global human deaths due to antibiotic resistant infections predicted to reach 10 million by 2050, more than the current death toll associated with different forms of cancer.
People nowadays have insufficient awareness of the severity of antibiotic misuse—not only would it contribute to the worsening of antibiotic resistance, but it would also kill harmless bacteria inside the human body, leading to other illnesses, and make patients antibiotic dependent. Therefore, our team put together an antibiotics use questionnaire and informing article to collect data on public awareness of antibiotic misuse and give proper instructions on correct use of antibiotics. Additionally, we prepared for the transformation of this into an offline activity. As soon as COVID-19 epidemic ends, we would arrange a stall in public areas and ask passersby to fill in the questionnaires, take one of our pamphlets to read, and receive our short lecture on topics mentioned above.
CCiC (Central China iGEM Consortium) is a national iGEM communication meeting held by Chinese universities. Its main purpose is to promote cooperation among domestic iGEM teams and introduce synthetic biology to the public. Its forms of interaction include team project display and inter-team communication. While sharing academic and experience on synthetic biology-related topics, the teams gained an opportunity to practice their presentations.
We participated with our product, Acneutralizer. Fortunately, we met a team( NWU_CHINA-A) that is highly relevant to our project and conducted in-depth exchanges and reached cooperation.
Due to the special circumstances of this year, we established multiple online media accounts for project promotion and synthetic biology knowledge promotion, including WeChat official accounts, Weibo accounts, Bilibili accounts, Douyin accounts and so on. We even filmed a short play focusing on young acne patients' mental states and placed it on our publicity platforms.
