Part One:

Consortium with five universities

Due to the sudden outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, most of our team members were forced to stay at home for at least the first season of this year. We barely had the chance to meet other iGEM teams face to face. However, our team still actively sought online communications with other teams to share ideas with them and learn from them, actually this process helped us a lot by improving our own project, finding what we have missed or ignored in project design, modeling, and human practice.

This year, we were invited to join a Consortium with five iGEM teams (NUDT_CHINA, BUCT_CHINA, UCAS_CHINA, SMMU_CHINA, OUC_CHINA) to establish long-term cooperation among its members.

On August 11th, the Consortium meeting was successfully held online. During the meeting, our experimental group presented the design and preliminary experimental results of our project to other teams. We also obtained lots of important feedback from them.

What we learned:

1.We should consider hosting Project-related lectures and reach-outs in our human practice part.

2.More multimedia techniques such as videos could be utilized to assist the presentation of projects. Brochures might also be helpful somehow.

 

 

Part Two:

Attending the seventh Conference of China iGEMers community

We participated in the CCiC online meetup on August 28 to 31, 2020, during which more than 60 teams all over China presented and exchanged their ideas. At the same time, our instructors and some experts and scholars in synthetic biology also gave us lectures in related fields, which made us deeply feel the charm of synthetic biology.

During the meetup, we obtained important feedbacks from both judges and other iGEM teams. For example, the differences on cell activities of the experimental group and control group may result in different transcription efficiency of GFP, which weakens the data’s integrity on proving the degradation ability of GFP PrePro.

Also, in the poster session, we are delighted to find that we have many similar ideas with Team SCU_WestChina in the synthetic biology education related public engagement. We hence established further connections on with them.

What we learned:

HP: In the HP part, we should consider how to achieve the interaction between HP and wet-lab experiments, further researches related to practical application direction of targeted protein degradation tools are still needed.

Experiment: In the experimental work, we should focus on how to push our project towards signal responsiveness. Also, we should consider the affection of the signal we use on the transcriptional and translational programs of the chassis.

Model: We may try to use model to understand the key factors in our project.

 

 

Part Three:

Collaboration with BNU_CHINA Team

During CCiC meetup, we were delighted to find that we have many similar ideas with Team BNU_CHINA To further understand each other’s project, a short online meeting was held and we discussed problem we were met in iGEM-related experiments

What we learned:

HP: In the HP part, different kinds of investigation methods, such as spreading questionnaire, could be utilized to understand how our project influence the society. This idea opened up a window for social research in our project.

Model: We discussed the technical details in the modeling of protein degradation, such as the degradation pathways and their kinetic parameters.
