Overview

Since many people have little knowledge of synthetic biology, we raised public awareness program to spread the basic knowledge and mindsets of synthetic biology and iGEM targeting high school and college students. We issued questionnaires and factsheets for our audience to provide knowledge and stimulate their curiosity in synthetic biology. The purpose of our activities is to deepen the public's understanding of synthetic biology, so that the project can be applied better in the future.

 

 

Part One: Synthetic biology seminar for freshmen majored in clinical medicine

The project of our iGEM 2020 project is mainly related to controlled protein degradation. Therefore, we prepared a brief presentation on both the mindsets of synthetic biology and the fundamental knowledge about ubiquitin protease system. A short discussion session and an interactive game session was also held. A brief survey was also prepared to tell if our seminar has reached our goal (as shown in the following figure).

Surprisingly, statistics showed that even in clinical medicine majored college students, only ~55% of the students were aware of the basics on synthetic biology and targeted protein degradation. Which implied that our public awareness program should be expanded to broader audience.

 

 

Part Two: The lecture in YaLi Middle School

Inspired by the first part of our public awareness program, and through the communication with CSU_CHINA, we got a chance to give a small lecture in YaLi Middle School with CSU_CHINA team members.

During the lecture, members of CSU_CHINA introduced some basics about synthetic biology to the students and then our human practice group members introduced the concept of our project and some basics about targeted protein degradation. Also, we talked about the idea of iGEM and why we enjoyed it. In addition, we prepared some brochures about synthetic biology and our projects for students in lower age.

 

 

Part Three: Online video explaining our project

After we finished our project promotion video, we prepared a Chinese version and uploaded it online allowing others to know our team and our project. The view counts surpassed 1000 times in a short time. And we obtain the excellent social effect.
