The ongoing pandemic makes this year's competition especially challenging. By combining our strengths, planning ahead, and learning from other teams, I hope to make this year's project a success!"
Lucy Chong
Finance Manager
Hi there! My name is Lucy Chong. I studied bio-pharmaceutical sciences and I'm currently a student of the Pharmacy pre-master. I'm the finance manager of this amazing team and my job is to keep track of all the finances and managing the crowdfunding. My interest lies in molecular genetics, biochemical pharmacology and medicines.
Tom Langelaar
Finance Manager
Tom is a third year bachelor bio-pharmaceutical sciences student. Besides his growing interest in life-science research he is always looking for challenges that take him out of his comfort zone. As the finance manager he had to come out of this comfort zone, contact potential sponsors and convince them to support our project, Rapidemic!
Amber Schonk
Communication Manager
Currently, Amber is a Biomedical Sciences Master's student at the LUMC. She loves science, but is also passionate about other related topics that you usually would not encounter in your daily research-life, such as business. Therefore, she is exploring a new side: engaging with the public by writing about popular science and doing PR as our Communication Manager!
Tijn Delzenne
Design Manager
Tijn is a multidisciplinary student, combining a bachelors in art history with a masters in Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology at the Leiden University. The combination of these two vastly different topics made him the perfect candidate to be the Design Manager of the 2020 team, bringing the science to the public through many evenings in Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.
Kelly van Strien
Programming Manager
Kelly is a Bachelor's student of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leiden. While having little programming experience, she decided to take on a challenge by becoming the Programming Manager. After lots and lots of hours of tutorials, coding and some mental breakdowns she created the core of our wiki, made with heart and soul (and some frustration ;) ).
Aukje Beers
Wiki & Project Manager
Aukje is a Master's student in Chemistry with a focus on chemical biology. She loves to organize and is a real critical thinker. This is why she is the team's Wiki and Project Manager. She also is a true Notion fanatic because organization is everything ;)
Sinisha Jovic
Experimental Design Manager
Sinisha is a Master's student in Biomedical Sciences. He enjoys to participate in health related projects and to contribute to the wellbeing of patients. Thus he joined the iGEM team. He is the experimental design manager because he believes that "Science is our superpower!".
Marijn van den Brink
Data Analysis Manager
Marijn is a Master's student in Life Science and Technology. Since her SynBio internship on building a synthetic cell from scratch, she was determined to once participate in an iGEM team. Now, she fulfills the role as Data Analysis Manager in this awesome project.
Tim van den Akker
Lab & Safety Manager
Tim is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Molecular Genetics & Biotechnology with a focus on molecular microbiology. During his internship, he worked on the structure and physiology of cell wall deficient bacteria. In our team, Tim is responsible for lab and safety of the project.
Sebastian Tandar
Modeling Manager
What do you think makes a good project?
"In general, a good project can be defined as one composed of rational plans aimed to solve an existing issue while, at the same time, provides a platform for its thinkers to pursue their hopes and ambitions. A good project, in the end, may resemble but a humble piece of the team's imagination, yet a progress worthy enough for the world to see."
Violette Defourt
Public Engagement Manager
Violette is a Master's student in Biomedical Sciences at the LUMC. She enjoys working at the interface of science and society, and is passionate about exchanging knowledge and sparking interesting discussions. Therefore, Violette feels right at home in her role as the team's Public Engagement Manager.
Joey Meijdam
Human Practices Manager
Joey is an Honours Bachelor's student in Molecular Science and Technology at the universities of Leiden and Delft. As Human Practices manager he researches the market through interviews with stakeholders to make sure our project makes an impact outside of academics! He loves his role since he always had a huge interest in business.
Güniz Özer Bergman
Entrepreneurship & Product Manager
Why did you join iGEM?
"I was in the first year of my bachelor's degree when I stumbled upon iGEM. I immediately wanted to participate, but my institution at that time wasn't a part of it. Ever since, participating in iGEM has been my dream. Reading about synthetic biology over the years, I became more and more excited about engineering biological systems for meaningful purposes, and decided to become a synthetic biologist. Now that I am prusuing my master's degree in Leiden University, I am blessed with this opportunity to take part in iGEM."
Ecoline & Rapper Demic
Mascots
Ecoline and Rapper Demic are Team iGEM Leiden 2020's mascots, recognizable from our logo. They were created at the conception of our project and have been sticking around ever since! One of their favorite games to play is hide-and-seek. Right now they have hidden themselves somewhere on our wiki. Have you already found them with your mouse?
While we were preparing for the Jamboree, Rapper Demic and Ecoline were up to shenanigans! They have secretely messed with one of our banners, have you noticed which one?
Team
Meet our team! Our international team consists of fourteen highly-motivated students from various disciplines. With our combined knowledge, we are creating an exciting project!
