Our Shared Purpose

On the iGEM Human Practices Committee, we recognize that using synthetic biology to address real-world problems requires thoughtful engagement with the world. We are trying to create a framework that helps iGEMers become reflective, responsive and responsible practitioners.

Our committee is responsible for developing all Human Practices related elements of the competition. We do this through offering guidance, incentives, and recognition, in an iterative process through which we are also learning.

Serving on the committee

We know our mission requires a diversity of values and expanding access to conversation. We’re seeking new members who can contribute new ideas and energy to our committee, especially:

  • People with varied expertise (including life sciences, engineering, social sciences, bioethics, and policy)
  • People from outside the USA and Europe, who bring global perspectives and reflect iGEM's geographic diversity
  • iGEM alumni who want to stay involved (including team members, mentors and judges)

Serving on the committee is fun and rewarding but also requires a strong commitment. We need committee members who are invested in helping hardworking iGEM teams to reflect on whether their individual and collective efforts are safe, responsible, and good for the world. As a committee member, you will gain numerous leadership and mentorship opportunities, along with myriad professional connections within the world of synthetic biology, which iGEM plays a significant role in defining.

If you can spend time actively contributing to improving Human Practices as a core aspect of iGEM, including reviewing and contributing to materials for teams and judges, mentoring participants, serving as an ambassador to help other understand our approach, and attending the virtual Jamboree in the Fall, we would love to have you on board!
